The Absolute Sound Review

Hugely exciting and a breakthrough in mini-monitor
Loudspeaker design. The new Pulsar's from Joseph Audio really made me take an
extended listen. This was something different. I thought I had heard it all when
it came to products of this type. How different could a mini-monitor Loudspeaker
sound....
The answer is very different. These remarkable little
beauties really pack some serious punch and depth for their demure size. If you
were to undergo a blindfolded listening session you would believe you were
listening to a very well accomplished floor standing design of much greater mass
and size. I would be happy to listen to these all day in a small Reference
system. This is why that have made my 'Best Performance For Money'
Recommended Components list.
The Joseph Audio Pulsar used the same technology from the
companies statement product being the Pearl 2 which are priced at $40K.
If you are considering a Loudspeaker of this type and you
have limited space may I recommend that you strongly put these on your short
list. Probably one of the only mini-monitors I would be comfortable listening to
with a highend system and not be wishing for more bass response.
Once again at this price level you are getting the very
best in American handmade craftsmanship and technology. The quality of finish is
remarkable and equal to the very best today's market can offer. Have a listen to
these and you will agree, Joseph Audio has really done something special with
their latest R&D.

So new were my review sample they were still factory cling
wrapped in their protective plastic covering.
Gloriously finished by Joseph Audio and with performance to
truly match their price and visual appeal.

Joseph Audio has employed some very unique and brilliant
looking binding posts that are made from Rhodium and are designed to accept
large gauge spade terminals with ease.

The bottom plate has been thoughtfully constructed with
what I would almost consider to be essential provisions for threaded locking
bolts in any bookshelf loudspeaker in this price range.
Very useful indeed when securing them to our
Custom Loudspeaker Stands for safety.

Joseph Audio Introduces the Pulsars!
Within its tiny cabinet, the Pulsar packs more of JosephAudio’s Pearl technology
per cubic inch than ever before. CES attendees were blown away by the Pulsar’s
satisfying bass and organic presentation. Their eyes simply could not believe
their ears.
The Pulsars were ably driven by the Bel Canto Ref 500 amplifiers, DAC 3 d/a
converter fed by their new USB link 24/96. The system featured the new Cardas
Clear Beyond speaker cables and interconnects.
The Absolute Sound’s Neil Gader was the first to break the story on the
internet, reporting that “The Pulsar will easily be one of the compacts to beat
in 2009.”

John Atkinson, the Editor of Stereophile, declared that the Pulsars delivered “
extraordinarily powerful low bass, considering the speaker's modest dimensions.”
as well as “ an uncolored, natural midrange.”

SPECIFICATIONS:
Impedance: 8 ohms nominal, 6 ohms minimum.
System impedance indicates whether the speaker presents a "hard" or "easy" load
on the amplifier. True 8 ohm speakers are less amplifier and cable sensitive,
and partner well with a broader range of amplifiers, including tube designs.
Crossover: 2 way Parallel Asymmetrical Infinite Slope Crossover at 2 kHz.
Constructed of specially selected components, each network is tested and
individually calibrated to a high degree of precision, resulting in a virtually
perfect match to the original design prototype.
The steep filter slope ensures good acoustical behavior in the crossover
regions, with a minimum of acoustical interference, along with low distortion
and wide dynamic range. Driver acoustic responses are in-phase throughout the
crossover regions.
Frequency Response:
The Pulsar delivers a very smooth and even response over a very broad listening
window. Unlike conventional low order crossover designs, the speaker retains its
sonic balance over a wide angle both vertically and horizontally. This results
in a higher level of fidelity than a simple on axis measurement can reveal.
Listening window response: within 2dB from 42 Hz to 20 kHz.
Dimensions and weight: 15" (381 mm) H x 9" (229 mm) W x 13" (229 mm) D.
Shipping weight approx 36 lbs. each (16.3 kg) / Packed in individual cartons.
